As best we can recollect, it was some time in the spring of 1997 that Dean Allemang and Graham Christian, who had been dancing together at contra dances and English Country Dances at the First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian Universalist, had their first conversation about rapper. They no longer remember who spoke the sacred word first, but it is certain that the other one said, "Rapper? You do rapper? I love rapper!" A few minutes of rapid conversation ensued, at the conclusion of which they had decided to found a gay rapper team. There was no real precedent, but why couldn't they make a try? After all, they'd met through gay contra dance. And, they wouldn't be starting entirely from nothing: Dean had danced rapper at Cambridge in England, Graham had danced rapper at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania (where there is still a vigorous rapper tradition).
So, Graham called the Country Dance and Song Society here in Massachusetts, and asked them to send him a set of six rapper swords. Dean and Graham quietly approached several dancers they deemed skillful and foolhardy enough to make the attempt with them. Some accepted, and some declined, but the first team consisted of:

The team practiced in the living room of a house then shared by Chris, Jeff, and Sean on Calvin Road in Jamaica Plain (a subset of Boston). Dean and Graham made some awesomely stupid mistakes in their efforts to reconstruct rapper from Cecil Sharp's fieldnotes and photocopied articles from the English Folk Dance and Song Society, as well as their own faulty memories, but in a few months they had a team and a routine.
The Gay Blades' debut came that fall, at the dance camp of the Lavender Country and Folk Dancers, that rich soil from which we'd sprung. Graham had never before or since heard such a roar from any audience, nor felt from any audience such a rush of excited approval and love, as greeted us at the conclusion of that first routine.
We have seen a number of changes since that evening, Sean, Peter, Jeff, Chris and Graham have all left the side to honor other commitments, and a much-loved musician moved away, but we remain very much ourselves.
Return to topMany changes have come to us since we first exposed ourselves to a grateful public, viz., the addition of the dancers whose faces you can see in many places around the website.
David Downs and Cen del Po comforted us for the loss of our striking brunets (Peter, Jeff, Chris) and rapidly brought their own substantial talents and distinct personalities into play. Dancing rapper with David (6'2", slouching) is now considered an indispensable stretching exercise for team members under 5'6" (Graham, Cindy, Robin, Anne).
Robin Fox and Doris Reisig cornered Dean and me one fine Fourth of July and informed us that our chromosomal distribution--five boys and not a single girl--was a little, uh, monotonous, not to mention perhaps a little sexist.
We were thrilled with the result when we agreed with them that they should dance with us. Robin continues to delight the team with her high spirits; Doris delighted us with her skill in dance and profound thoughtfulness, but she has since gone on to other pursuits. We miss her.
Anne Theriault approached us one Lilac Sunday, having noticed, as she put it, "You're letting girls play now too." Anne brought us the benefit of many years of ritual dance with several teams, perfect stepwork, speed, and humor. She is currently on hiatus: we salute her for her marvelous contributions to our dancing.
At some point in the neverending story, Dvora Silberman morphed from musician to dancer, bringing us the elegance of her Renaissance dance experience.
Like her, Cindy Smith began as a musician with us, and has eased into a dancer's spot. She has proved, among other things, a fine seamstress, along with her partner Anne (yes, that Anne). Cindy and Anne are responsible for the completion of our fabulous comfortable, go-anywhere, reversible, take-no-prisoners vests (see recent photographs to gasp over the understated elegance of the vests' "B side").
Let me not overlook our original Webmaster, Peter Rolla-a strong and solid #5 if ever there was one. Peter has the best and most natural Rita Hayworth imitation we've ever seen: certainly the best we've ever seen from a rapper dancer. Peter, too, has gone on to other endeavours, leaving the side to pursue gainful employment in his chosen field on the left coast.
Graham Christian, the original author of these pages, has left the side to follow his dream of a doctoral degree in the humanities. We miss his excellence at dance, and his rapier sharp wit.
One dancer remains from the founding side (affectionately referred to as Team A): Dean Allemang. Although we operate primarily by consensus, Dean is the foreman while (most) routines are in progress. We think of him as the Team Mathematician, given his impressive higher degrees in the higher mathematics. He is also the only member of our team who can boast of semi-professional dance experience, and, as if in token of his dedication, he can be counted upon to sweat first and sweat most, no matter what the weather.
